Giveaway! "A Fairy Godmom's Book of Reminders"

A few weeks ago I did a post on wanting to find a great devotional geared towards moms. Although I did find some great ones on Amazon, I wanted to visit my local Barnes & Noble and have a peek inside of them in person before buying one or the other. Can you believe that I went to Barnes and Noble last week but got sidetracked looking in pastry books, and books for Ilah, that I totally forgot to go to the Spiritual/Christianity section! Gotta go back.

But recently I was blessed to receive a book called "A Fairy Godmom's Book of Reminders", written by Julie Wheaton and Patrece Powers. When I opened up the first page, I just couldn't put it down. I read half of the {127 page, 4 Chapter} book in one sitting and finished the rest of it up over the next several days during my nightly quiet time {which of course happens after Ilah is in bed}.

Although it's not written from a Christian perspective, this book is full of practical, humorous, straight-forward talk - and inspired advice - on navigating the path of womanhood as it winds its way through motherhood. I found myself highlighting sentences and paragraphs to refer back to when life seems a little unbalanced, overwhelming, or when I'm frazzled about one thing or the other. No doubt, motherhood is a beautiful thing, but it also requires a lot of sacrafice, patience, and multi-tasking - with a side of daily love! We want to give our best every day but what happens if we don't? Is our life seized? Sometimes we make things harder on ourselves and just need to remember to embrace this great place in life that we're in, realize that rough days and easy days rotate, and that each day we have the ability to not only give to our family, but also to ourselves too.

Here are some things that I took away from this great read:

- If we moms share anything, it's the experience of change.

- When you allow yourself to become a mother and think of that as growing into and creating your new self, you have a much easier time. You don't come from a place of expectation and demand; rather, you focus more on observation and intuition. In developing awareness, you find confidence.

- Life is not a dress rehearsal. We make our own choices, and we live the real life. As the current commercial says, "having a baby changes everything". Allow the changes to occur.

- As parents, something we can always share with our children is to be authentic human beings. Our children need us, as parents, to live as true to ourselves as possible. We need that for ourselves as well.

- Take a moment to focus on what you love about yourself and the new things that you're doing as a mom that you never dreamed would be a part of your life.

- Recalling the early days of dating/marriage: Going back to "the way we were" is an image. We can't go back any more than younger couples can advance forward to where we are now.

- In your husband caring for your child/ren: There's more than my way to care for our children. Our styles are different, but the priorities are the same.

- The more I begin with myself, the more I find my children joining me. Being myself is more important than being mom; being myself will take care of being mom.

- Participate in the experiences that are in front of us.

- We believe that we can choose what kind of mom we will be ahead of time: Stay-at-home mom. Cookies and milk mom. Working mom. Single mom. Married mom. Yet we don't choose the kind of children we will be mothers to.

- Even if we decide how our lives will look like after we become mothers, we're only guessing. What we do know is that we signed up for the experience of motherhood. As we face each experience, we instinctively know what we want from that experience.

Great nuggets! The book is filled with them!! And the last chapter 3 is to the Dad's!

Mother's Day is just around the corner and this book will make such a wonderful gift for a woman in your life who is a mother, about to be a mother, or is planning to be a mother! A Spontaneous Date Night

Last night my husband and I had an impromptu date night. I love it when that happens! In the morning I had dropped Ilah off at my moms house and then went to Tuesday morning bible study at our church. Afterwards we all went to lunch {well, most of us went to lunch} and then afterwards I went on to run some errands. By the time I got back to my mom's house it was 4:30 p.m. Man, the time just flew!! Since Ilah was already at my mom's house, Dele asked if I was up for doing dinner at a new Cuban place that opened up near our home. We've been here once before, a few weeks ago, and loved it!! We bought a $25 gift certificate for just $2 off of restaurant.com and gave the new place a try. It has become one of our go-to spots now since the food is so good and it's so close to home! Not to mention, the atmoshere is beautiful, and on the weekends they play live music. Since discovering we really like this place, we bought a few more of the gift cards so we dine at a really nice place for super cheap : )
Dele met me there since he was coming from work and when we both got out of our cars, I jokingly said to him, "does your wife know you're here?". There was a man who passed by us just as I said that and after he walked by, he turned around and looked back at us! No one was meant to hear my little joke! Woops! Lol! We had the BEST time during dinner.

I told Dele that I can see why some married couples {who have children} consider a weekly date night {without children} to be so important. We dine out frequently, but Ilah is often with us {because we love having her with us} but as we sat at dinner together, not having to tend to a little one, our focus was solely on each other - and even though we weren't talking about anything deep or important, we really connected. It was such a wonderful night!

After dinner I went and picked up Ilah and told Dele to stay home and relax. He was up super late {5:30 a.m.!} the night/morning before finalizing an app that he has been working on. On the drive to get Ilah, I was on cloud 9. It's amazing what one hour of truly connecting with your spouse can do. It's so easy to get caught up in the routines of life; it's good for the soul to reconnect with the one you love, without a single distraction....to simply be present and give all of yourself to one moment. It's bliss.

A Wonderful Easter! {Recap}

We had a WONDERFUL Easter Weekend!! Friday night we attended Good Friday service at our church. It was AMAZING. I wasn't sure if we were going to make it because Ilah had fallen asleep really late in the afternoon and was still asleep by the time that we needed to start getting ready. I rarely ever wake her from a nap but I really wanted to go to Good Friday service and she had already been sleeping for an hour and a half so I figured she had already had a good amount of sleep. I knew that she would also love to play with other little ones her age and that going out would also be good for her. Luckily, Ilah is always the sweetest thing when she wakes up - always so happy! She perked right up, smiled at me and was ready to go along with whatever was happening next! Oh, I just love our girl! Our Good Friday service was mostly a worship service - and Dele and I love saturating ourselves in worship. It was wonderful to be in church with other believers to usher in the presence of God through our worship, partake in communion as a body of believers, and reverence the Lord on a day in which we remember the sacrafice that Jesus made for us.

Last year my mom got Ilah this little Easter book and for the past few weeks we have been reading it to her.... I have done a few posts on how we are loving this new church that we are attending and how it really reminds me of "the good 'ol days". I was surprised when we entered the building and the pastors wife told me that this was a family service and that Ilah was more than welcome to stay in service with us. What?!? Really?!! I thought that was so great. Ultimately we chose to take Ilah to her classroom so she could be with other little ones her age and play and have fun {she ran in and didn't look back once!}, but I loved that we had the option to keep her with us or take her to a classroom. I loved that Good Friday service was a family service. They had handouts for the kids to keep them preoccupied {word searches, coloring pages, etc.} and had candy for them too. And while although there were a good amount of children in the service, they didn't make a peep. They were all so well-behaved. There are so many things that I {we} have grown to love about this church. It truly does take me back to the church days that I was raised up in...where people showed up with their authentic selves, you connected and formed tight bonds yet your circle was always open, families/people go to lunch together after church rather than going your separate ways; you simply did life together - in the real sense. There is so much "fluff" in churches these days. It has been so refreshing to be in a new church that is giving us the desires of our heart. We look forward to growing in so many ways there!

Saturday afternoon we took Ilah to the park! The weather was beautiful and it was too nice to stay indoors! I have taken Ilah here before during the week but this time Daddy could come because it was the weekend!

Ilah was in her cute little bunny shirt that I bought her a few weeks ago.....
This little girl is always squirming to get down! I had just taken her out of the swing and she was like, "put me down Mama!"....

Daddy and his girl!!!Always waving hello to someone! Ilah is such a friendly little girl!....

Then Ilah wanted to switch horsies and ride on the white one..... We took a stroll up to the play field and saw that there were some soccer games going on and there were little kids playing. So cute! As we sat down to watch for a bit, Ilah stripped the bow from her head, I rolled up her jeans and we relished in the nice weather!...
And I also got some lovin' from my girl!.... "Hey, I see myself on your glasses Mama!".....

An ice-cream truck came through and of course I shared my snow cone with Ilah....The next day it was Easter Sunday!!! Ilah was all dolled up in her Easter dress, ready to go to church! My mom went with us and we all loved the service!
We had a short bit of time to kill until our brunch reservations so we came home for just 30 minutes and gave Ilah her Easter baskets!....

Ilah was so excited and didn't know which thing to grab first! The first thing out of the basket was the biggest thing...her Dora playing blocks!....

Ilah LOVES books! I bought her two books and one that she can take in the bath with her!....

It was the cutest thing seeing Ilah love on her bunny when she took it out of the basket!...

Showing Daddy what she got!....

We left for brunch and then after we returned home, Ilah took a LONG 3 hour nap. When she woke up, she had two more Easter baskets to go through from her Abuela!
The Donald Duck on the left talks and walks!....

Last year we were in Canada for Easter and Ilah was just a few months old. The time just flew by.....This year we made wonderful Easter memories at home that we will always remember and cherish! I am so blessed to have a Savior who died on the cross for me, that I have a beautiful healthy family, and that life keeps getter sweeter as the days goes on. So thankful. So grateful.
